Welcome to the 360 survey

Increasingly, Leadership Programmes are using the 360 appraisal process as a means to enable those working at a senior level in public services to gain the views of colleagues on their leadership and management practice and to identify their own particular development needs. In particular, the process helps managers to understand how their behaviour influences both their own personal effectiveness and the impact it has on the organisation.

In order to gain the maximum benefit from this survey, you will need to complete the following stages:

  1. Complete your self-assessment survey, including details of people who would be in a good position to provide feedback on you as a leader. You will need an email address to be able to complete this. Please bear in mind that the more people who complete the review for you, the more valuable the final report will be. You should encourage them to complete the survey including written commentaries, which provide a richer source of information than simple scores.
  2. Share your final report with your line manager, coach or Learning Coordinator to reflect on the outcomes and inform rich development conversations.

When you receive the results of the report, it will be important to remember and reflect on the developmental purpose of the activity. So, for each aspect of your work, you will need to consider the following outcomes.

  • your colleagues' views match your own. In this case, your strengths and areas of your work that need development have been confirmed;
  • your colleagues have a higher estimate of your competence than you do. You will need to consider why this is the case and what might be the developmental goals arising from this difference of perception;
  • your colleagues have a lower estimate of your competence than you do. Again, you will need to reflect on why this is the case and consider your possible development needs.

Remember: This activity is an assessment of your work, not of you as a person.

Instructions for the 360 review process

For participants

You will be registered onto the system and will be emailed your username and password. When you log in you will be taken to your Learning Account. On your Learning Account page, you will be able to see links to:

  • complete a self evaluation of your leadership behaviours;
  • invite others to perform a 360 degree evaluation of your behaviours You will need individual email addresses to be able to complete this;
  • access a report of your results (when they become available).

As part of the feedback process we would ask you to nominate people who are in a good position to provide feedback on you as a leader. Please bear in mind that the more people who complete the review for you, the more valuable the final report will be. We recommend that you nominate the following people:

  • your Line Manager - the person you report to
  • all your Direct Reports - who you line manage
  • up to 5 Peers that are not your Direct Reports
  • up to 3 Partners
  • Service Users (as appropriate)

You will be unable to view the reports until the surveys are completed.

For those contributing to an evaluation

If you are an evaluator you will have been emailed an invitation to evaluate someone you work with (the participant). The invitation will contain a link for you to click on, that will take you to the survey home page.

Below each statement please select the rating that best reflects how well the individual displays the behaviour described. Your comments will be invaluable, so please be sure to include these in the boxes provided. All answers are presented to the delegate anonymously in a summarised report.
